Function / Content

This series consists of the following three types of land lease; Lease of waste lands of the Crown, Crown Lease (Northern Territory pastoral), and Lease on Purchase on Credit. Each lease includes the number of the lease, date, and name of lessee, and most include sketched diagrams of the pastoral block. The indenture, duly annotated with names, dates, locations, terms, fees, signatures of the parties involved, and official seal, comprise the main document within each lease. The leases are described with additional information from the Land Tenure History Unit, and according to the following fields: Lease type and number [Description 1], Name of Leaseholder [Description 2], Locality [Description 3], Comments [Description 4], and Agency identity number [Description 5]. The locality is given as the current location of the lease, information in square brackets refers to the location given on the lease. The comments are the unit's research notes on the land and includes the original application number (e.g. APPN 0004/72 on waste lands lease number 1) and any gazette notice (i.e. SAGG is South Australian Government Gazette). The identity number is the Land Tenure History Unit's reference number. The registers relating to most of the leases are held by the Darwin office of the National Archives of Australia in E1588.
